What is lupus erythematosus?
Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disorder caused when the immune system attacks its own tissues and organs. It can affect the skin, joints, and even internal organs (heart, kidneys). Lupus erythematosus is divided into 4 types:
- Systematic
- Subacute cutaneous
- Discoid
- Lupus hypodermatitis

Cutaneous lupus erythematosus
Cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) includes three subtypes that affect the skin: acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (ACL), subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCL), and chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE).
