The cause is unknown, but it is believed to involve genetic and environmental factors, as well as some immune system dysfunction.
The treatment of atopic dermatitis is always based on the stage/chronicity of the dermatitis. A necessary element of the treatment is good hydration of the skin with appropriate creams. Extensive skin contact with water should be avoided. It is also recommended to try to avoid possible known triggers of a new exacerbation of the disease. Further therapeutic options in more pronounced stages of the disease are topical corticosteroids of category II and III as well as tacrolimus preparations to avoid long-term use of cortisone. Antihistamines can be administered systematically in cases of intense itching, and modern targeted pharmaceutical treatments with biological agents can also be used in adults with severe forms of atopic dermatitis.
