For the diagnosis of melanoma and pigmented skin lesions, special methods are used, such as dermoscopy and computer mapping.
The initial examination of moles is done with a careful clinical examination in combination with dermatoscopy. The latter is a special clinical method in which a dermatoscope is used, i.e. a special lens of high resolution and sharpness that allows dermatologists to see "inside" the lesion. In this way, moles are initially evaluated and conclusions are drawn as to whether a mole should be surgically removed.
Some people with many moles need to have digital mole mapping. Digital mole mapping uses very high-resolution lenses to record even the finest features of moles. This method allows areas of the body to be digitally photographed in order to record and evaluate any new moles that may appear, and also allows each mole to be recorded individually.
The entire process does not exceed one hour and is usually repeated annually or even earlier if deemed necessary.
For patients who belong to high-risk groups for skin cancer, periodic checking of the size and microscopic structure of moles is recommended.
